{"id":3638,"date":"2023-10-27T18:42:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T18:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpcv.pt\/circular-fora-de-portugal\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T15:43:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T15:43:44","slug":"driving-outside-portugal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gpcv.pt\/en\/driving-outside-portugal\/","title":{"rendered":"Driving Outside Portugal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<script>\n    window.addEventListener('load', () => {\n        let linkvar = document.querySelector('.description_block_links a')\n        linkvar?.parentNode.classList.add('mt-8')\n    })\n<\/script>\n\n<div class=\"shadow-box px-[16px] py-10 rounded-[32px] mt-8 lg:py-[32px] lg:p-[64px] lg:mt-[62px]\">\n\n    <div class=\"leading-[44px] block_default lg:pt-[35px] lg:max-w-[50%]\">\n        <h3 class=\"h2 font-bold leading-[44px]\" >What do I need to know before I travel?<\/h3>    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"grid-cols-1 md:grid-cols-2 gap-5 grid mt-8\">\n        <div class=\"subtitle\">\n            <p>Always bear in mind that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate) only guarantees the mandatory Motor Third Party Liability insurance cover.<\/li>\n<li>Whenever you go abroad, the insured capital is the minimum established by the legislation of the country you are visiting, even if your insurance policy guarantees a lower capital.<\/li>\n<li>The Green Card is valid for any country whose name or acronym is not crossed out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">It is possible to extend cover to other countries, as long as it has been previously requested to and accepted by your Insurer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">If you have taken out own damage cover, check that the geographical scope of this cover includes the territory where you will be driving (there may be countries where there is mandatory motor third party liability insurance cover, but not own damage cover); if this is not the case, i.e. if own damage is not covered in the country you intend to visit, but you still want to keep own damage cover, contact your insurer and ask for the territorial extension for that particular country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Extending the territorial scope may imply the payment of an additional amount.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n\n        <div class=\"subtitle description_block_links\">\n            <ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"mb-5\">\n<li>The information you can gather at the scene of an accident can be fundamental to the fair and timely settlement of your claim.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"mb-5\">\n<li>You should always carry an Accident Report (DAAA \u2013 Amicable Statement) form with you and keep it in your vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">This is the European accident report. If the other driver has a similar form, but in another language, you can use it without fear, bearing in mind that the numbers on both forms have the same content and meaning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>You must write down the number of your insurance&#8217;s Roadside Assistance line.<br \/>\nIn the event of an accident or breakdown abroad, it is extremely useful to promptly contact someone who can immediately come to your aid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<script>\n    window.addEventListener('load', () => {\n        let linkvar = document.querySelector('.description_block_links a')\n        linkvar?.parentNode.classList.add('mt-8')\n    })\n<\/script>\n\n<div class=\"shadow-box px-[16px] py-10 rounded-[32px] mt-8 lg:py-[32px] lg:p-[64px] lg:mt-[62px]\">\n\n    <div class=\"leading-[44px] block_default lg:pt-[35px] lg:max-w-[50%]\">\n        <h3 class=\"h2 font-bold leading-[44px]\" >Do I always need to carry a Green Card?<\/h3>    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"grid-cols-1 md:grid-cols-2 gap-5 grid mt-8\">\n        <div class=\"subtitle\">\n            <p>Not always&#8230; we explain:<\/p>\n<p><strong>PORTUGAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Green Card or International Motor Insurance Certificate (IMIC) is proof of valid and effective insurance for vehicles registered at Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Green Card, proof of the validity of the insurance is also provided by the provisional certificate, the receipt or the motor third party liability certificate, when valid.<\/p>\n<p>From 11 July 2023, Green Cards can be issued and made available in digital format, but they can also be provided on paper at the insured or the policyholder\u2019s request, at no additional cost. The Green Card issued electronically replaces the paper insurance certificate.
